Choosing the Right Air Fryer

Choosing the write air fryer can make a big difference in your cooking experience, but there are so many options. There are two main categories, basket-style and oven-style. Both styles use rapid hot air circulation to cook food. Air fryers are simply put, small convection ovens.

Basket Air Fryer Advantages

• Good choice for small households (1-4 people)
• Smaller footprint, great for smaller kitchens
• Generally more affordable
• Faster preheating

Basket Air Fryer Disadvantages

• Limited cooking capacity
• Can't monitor food without opening
• Requires batch cooking for larger quantities

Choose Basket Air Fryer If:

• You mostly air fry
• You want maximum crispiness
• You have limited counter space
• You're cooking for 1-4 people regularly
• You want the most affordable option

Oven-Style Air Fryer Advantages

• Larger families (5+ people)
• Multi-functional cooking 
• Can replace multiple appliances
• Can cook different foods simultaneously

Oven-Style Air Fryer Disadvantages

• Requires more counter space
• Typically more expensive
• Longer preheating time 
• May take longer to achieve the same level of crispiness as basket models

Choose Oven-Style Air Fryer If:

• You want an all-in-one appliance
• You're cooking for larger groups
• You want to see your food cook
• You want to cook multiple items at once

Ingredients You Need

• sweet paprika
• garlic powder
• onion powder
• dried oregano
• ground cayenne pepper
• aleppo pepper flakes - aleppo pepper is made from halaby chilies and is named after the Syrian city Aleppo. It has a mild to medium heat. If you don’t have Aleppo pepper, use red pepper flakes 
• salt
• brown sugar
• olive oil
• fresh salmon - I like to use skinless salmon

How To Make

Prepare Salmon: If you are not using skinless salmon, remove the skin from your salmon. Pat the salmon with paper towels to dry the surface. Cut your salmon into 1 or 2 inch cubes, place them in a shallow dish and drizzle the oil over the cubes. Toss the cubes well to make sure they are all coated, set aside.

Mix the spices: In a large bowl combine the paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, Aleppo pepper flakes, brown sugar, and salt. Mix with your finger to make sure there are no brown sugar clumps.

Toss and air fry salmon cubes: Add the cubed salmon bites to the spice mixture and gently toss to coat.

Basket air fry: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees. Place the salmon bites on the basket of the air fryer in an even layer with space between them. If your air fryer is small you will have to work in batches. Air fry for 8-10 minutes. 

Oven air fry - Select air fryer function to preheat to 400 degrees. Line a shallow baking pan with parchment paper, place a wire rack in the baking pan. (You may want to spray the rack with a bit of cooking spray to make cleanup easier). Place the salmon on the rack leaving a bit of space between each piece to allow the air to flow around each piece for even cooking. Cook for 8-10 minutes. 

Serve: Place your salmon bites on a serving dish and serve immediately.

Serving Suggestions for Spicy Air Fryer Salmon Bites

Grain Bowls - Serve over rice, quinoa, or farro. Top it with avocado, pickled onions, spicy mayo, eggs, or your favorite veggie.

Tacos or Lettuce Wraps - Use warm tortillas, butter lettuce, or cabbage leaves and garnish with crunchy slaw, salsa.

Salads - Toss on a bed of arugula, mixed greens, or romaine. Dress with lemon tahini, honey mustard vinaigrette, or chili-lime sauce.

Wraps & Pitas - Fill tortillas, pita pockets, or lavash and add  hummus, tzatziki, cucumber, feta, and slaw.

Stir-Fry or Noodle Bowls - Toss over stir-fry or spicy soba noodles, and add in edamame, bell peppers, or scallions.

Brunch or Breakfast Bowls - Add to creamy scrambled eggs or grain bowls, served with roasted sweet potatoes, spinach, or avocado.

Spicy Flavor Variations

Gochugaru Spice

Combine gochugaru, a Korean red pepper flake, garlic powder, ground ginger, sesame seeds, and brown sugar. Gochugaru has more of a fruity heat.  

Harissa Spice

Use harissa powder, garlic powder, and brown sugar. This North African blend brings complex, smoky heat with warm spice undertones.

Thai Spice

Mix red pepper flakes, garlic powder, ground ginger, brown sugar. Add some lime zest before serving for a balance of Thai heat and citrus.

Chipotle Spice

Combine chipotle powder, ancho chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, and brown sugar. 

Szechuan Spice

Use ground Szechuan peppercorns, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, ground ginger, and brown sugar. Be aware, the Szechuan pepper has a numbing and tingling heat that may be different from other spices.

How To Store Your Leftovers

In the Fridge 

If you have any leftovers, place them in a airtight container and store them in your refrigerator for 2-3 days. In my home we rarely have leftovers because they are so delicious, it’s hard to stop eating them.

In the Freezer 

I don’t recommend freezing them, because it could change the texture. But if you have to freeze them, make sure they are completely cooled before wrapping them tightly and placing them in an airtight freezer safe container. Eat them within 2-3 months. 

Reheating

From the Fridge 

You can reheat them in the air fryer or oven, using a medium heat to keep them from drying out. You can also enjoy them cold or at room temperature.

From the Freezer 

I recommend defrosting before reheating the salmon bites in your air fryer or oven to prevent them from drying out.ontent
